Leprosy Camps

Leprosy work has been the backbone of Karuna Prem from its very inception. The work was done under the Banner and the premises of Missionary of Charity. The work involves :

  • OPD services
  • Surgeries for Lepers

OPD Services: These are held on every alternate Wednesdays at Prem Nagar Leprosy home at Seemapuri Delhi. Since 2006, in association with Lepra India Trust, OPD is held on every Thursday at Sai Temple, Lodhi Road and at Seemapuri on every Tuesdays since 2011

Surgical Work: About 40000 surgeries have been performed so far at different centres in India. The following surgeries are performed on Lepers:

  • Reconstructive Surgery- Hand, foot, nose. Eyes and skin grafts
  • Orthopedic Surgery – Infected ulcers , infected bones, amputation and joint deformities
  • General Surgery- Hernia, hydrocele, cysts, growths, piles and peri-anal surgeries

Places where it is done: This work is done at different centres of Missionaries of Charity in proper operation theatres regularly and twice or once a year as follows.

Regularly at
  • Prem Nagar Leprosy home at Seemapuri, Delhi on alternate Wednesdays
  • Gandhiji Shanti Niwas at Janla, Bhuvaneshwar
  • Gandhiji Prem Niwas at Titagarh, Howrah
  • Brother House of Missionaries of Charity at New Cooch Behar, Assam
Twice or Once a year:
  • Surat, Gujarat
  • Nongpoh, Meghalaya
  • Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh
  • Raipur, Madhya Pradesh

West Bengal

Three to four doctors including one female doctor and one dentist, along with some paramedics and volunteers normally attend such a mini camp which provides OPD services to as many as about 500-800 patients per day. Usually held in a building of a community such as a temple, a Gurudwara or an existing dispensary. A local organizing committee or group is always involved. Usually held every month or every two months at a particular place.

With the help of this many camps we have been able to provide medical services to nearly 1 lac patients per year since last two years

Orissa

Uttar Pradesh
